Egg ColoursWhy Fish Eggs For A Fly Fisherman?

Simple really, we try as fly fisherman to match the hatch and in every stillwater and river because we will find fish eggs or roe during sometime of the year. Every size of egg is targeted by fish species targeting  fish roe provides the highest amount of protein, by volume, compared to any other stream/lake food. With our matching the hatch we need egg flies as part of our fishing arsenal.

Eggs come in a vast variety of colors, translucent and bright getting more dense fading to white when they die.  Brown trout, steelhead, rainbow trout, brook trout, cutthroat, bass and many fish species will eat eggs as they are large chunks of protein giving energy to fish to continue their growth.

Fish Roe Colors

Natural fish roe comes in a range of colors according to species and can even vary within species. Typical roe colors include: black, red, silver-gray, amber, brown, gold, orange, yellow and rreen.

With our advanced fully computerised dyeing facilities Semperfli is able to dye to match natural egg colors and also produce hot spot attractor colors to provide huge variety of egg flies.

Fish Roe Sizes

The smallest egg sizes we find in  rivers and lakes are usually in the 1mm to 2 mm size for the many sucker species, whitefish, crayfish, and frogs. They can then vary from 1.6mm for largemouth bass, 2.3mm for smallmouth bass, 3.5mm to 4.5mm for trout through to large rainbow trout, brown trout and cutthroat trout. Steelhead and salmon species in this range including sockeye salmon, pink salmon and arctic char have eggs 6mm diameter to large salmon whose eggs are 8mm to 10mm.

Why Have Semperfli Created EggStatic?

Looking at the market many fly fishermen used egg yarn to tie their egg flies, we knew it could be made easier to tie egg flies. Looking at our own blob chenilles we decided we could create something much better to specifically match fish roe and developed specifications for EggStatic which include:

  • a continuous material making it easy to tie
  • fibres which became translucent when wet to make them appear more roe like
  • tintable irise sparkle tinsel embedded for extra attraction
  • fully bonded core to stop yarn breaking apart
  • fully dyeable including core in range of colors to match fish roe colors and hot spot attractor colors

From the specifications the Semperfli R&D team developed a new Slush Fibre which appears translucent and like an egg when wet. We have developed a range of dye colors which match eggs in nature or are colors that will stimulate bites, a stunning range dyed in our fully computerised dyeing machine, the first in the Industry.
